What is Ahecha?

Ahecha Paraguay in the indigenous language of Guaraní of the Guaraní people of Paraguay means, “I see Paraguay”. Ahecha Paraguay is a participatory photography project designed to provide Paraguayan youth the opportunity to develop their creativity, their self-confidence, and gain new life perspectives through the lenses of cameras. The project puts cameras in the hands of young Paraguayans and teaches them the basics of photography through highly interactive workshops that promote self-discovery, creativity, and self-analysis. Ahecha Paraguay also includes photo exchanges between participating communities as a means of fostering understanding of others and pride in one’s own work. Ahecha Paraguay culminates on an annual basis with national exhibitions of selected photographs from every community.

Guaraní

Paraguay is the only country in South America with two official languages, Spanish and Guaraní. Paraguayans elect to speak one language over the other based, not on geographic location, but on the context of the conversation. Guaraní often captures the essence of a situation in a way that that does not translate into Spanish or English.
